TODAY IN HISTORY

1975: Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton, cofounder of the first free Catholic school in America, is declared the first U.S.-born saint by Pope Paul VI.

1814: Francis Scott Key writes “The Star-Spangled Banner” after watching the American flag rise above bomb-battered Fort McHenry in Baltimore during the War of 1812.

1977: Steve Biko, a young black leader in South Africa, dies while in police custody. The impact of his death has been compared to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in the United States.

1982: Princess Grace of Monaco, formerly actress and fashion icon Grace Kelly, dies one day after crashing her car. She was 52.
