TODAY IN HISTORY

1953: Jacqueline Bouvier and Sen. John Kennedy marry in Newport, R.I. They had a wedding party of 25 people and over 1,000 guests at the reception. Robert F. Kennedy served as best man.

1954: CBS’ Lassie premieres. The kids’ favorite wins Emmys for its first two seasons and runs for 17 years. All of the dogs that played Lassie on television were male.

1959: Bonanza, the first TV Western shown in color, debuts on NBC
