1919:Gen. John Pershing and 25,000 troops parade down New York’s Fifth Avenue as the city welcomes World War I doughboys home.

1608: John Smith becomes president of the Jamestown colony, thanks in part to his leadership during the two previous harsh winters.

1955: John Wayne introduces CBS’ prime-time TV series Gunsmoke, starring James Arness, which runs for 20 years, longer than any other Western.
