1971: Inmates at New York’s Attica Correctional Facility revolt after talks about better treatment go sour. The state regains control after four days, 43 deaths.

1956: An estimated 54 million people watch Elvis Presley sing “Love Me Tender” on The Ed Sullivan Show.

1957: President Dwight Eisenhower signs the first civil rights bill since Reconstruction. It targets voter interference and other discrimination.
