TODAY IN HISTORY, 2001



8:46 a.m.: Terrorists crash American Airlines Flight 11, with 92 people aboard, into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Seventeen minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175, with 45 people on board, hits the south tower. A total of 2,752 people die at what becomes known as ground zero.

9:40 a.m.:
American Airlines Flight 77 carrying 64 people slams into the Pentagon killing a total of 184 people.

10 a.m.: Passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93 crash their own plane into the ground near Shanksville, Pa., keeping the plane’s hijackers from fulfilling their mission. All 40 passengers and crew perish.
