CHARITY OF THE WEEK

The Autism Research Institute (autism.com)was founded in 1967 to conduct and sponsor research aimed at improving the quality of life for children and adults with autism spectrum disorders. Its findings have greatly improved the methods of diagnosing, treating, and preventing autism, as well as our understanding of the many genetic and environmental factors that contribute to its development. Over the past three years alone, the institute gave more than $1.5 million in research grants. ARI offers a wealth of information on autism through its website and publishes a newsletter to report advances in research. To spread awareness worldwide, the institute also helps to maintain the Global Autism Collaboration and last year sponsored scientific conferences in five other countries.

The charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
