CHARITY OF THE WEEK

The Wikimedia Foundation (wikimediafoundation.org) is dedicated to the global distribution of free multilingual information. Wikipedia, its most popular resource, contains more than 24 million volunteer-authored and collaboratively edited articles in over 285 languages. More than 483 million people consult Wikipedia every month, making it the sixth most popular website in the world. Wikimedia’s other resources include Wikinews, Wikibooks, and the Wiktionary, which work on the same principle of volunteerism. Rather than selling ad space, Wikimedia is funded primarily by donations from hundreds of thousands of individuals from more than 50 countries who work to further the vision of founder Jimmy Wales: “a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.”

The charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
