NYU professor and professional "ludologist" (read: videogameresearcher) Jesper Juul thinks that the constant experience of failure is actually what draws us to the medium.
The word ludologist comes from a Latin word meaning "to play." The study of games and game-playing, especially videogames, is called "ludology."
