1965:Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov performs the first extravehicular activity, commonly referred to as a "space walk," in the history of space exploration. For 20 minutes, Leonov floats in space, tethered to his Voskhod 2 capsule.

1922:Mohandas K. Gandhi was sentenced to prison in India for civil disobedience

1945: Maurice "Rocket" Richard of the Montreal Canadiens becomes the first player in the National Hockey League to score 50 goals in a 50-game season, scoring number 50 with 2 minutes and 15 seconds left to go in the final game, against the Boston Bruins.

1976: David Bowie makes his starring film debut as — you guessed it — an alien from outer space, in the science fiction flick The Man Who Fell to Earth, which opens in cinemas in London on this day.
