1989:The Exxon Valdez supertanker runs into a reef in Alaska's Prince William Sound; more than 11 million gallons of oil would leak into the Pacific Ocean, affecting hundreds miles of coastline and killing hundreds of thousands of marine animals. The ship's captain, Joseph Hazelwood, was later acquitted of felony charges related to the spill, but was convicted of a misdemeanor for which he performed 1,000 hours of community service and paid a $50,000 fin

1955: Barbara Bel Geddes, Ben Gazzara and Burl Ives star in the Broadway debut of Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, for which Williams would be awarded his second Pulitzer Prize.

 1972:The album "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd was released, remaining on the charts until 1988, the longest run in history.

1996: American astronaut and biochemist Shannon Lucid enters the Russian Mir space station, disembarking from the NASA space shuttle Atlantis. Lucid's 188-day stay aboard Mir would set the record for the longest stay in space by a woman.
