MARCH 21
1999:After almost 20 days and more than 25,000 miles, Brian Jones and Bertrand Piccard land the Breitling Orbiter 3 in the Egyptian desert, completing the first nonstop around-the-world flight in a hot air balloon.

1939: After popularizing the tune on her radio show, Kate Smith first records God Bless America for Victor Records. Irving Berlin had originally written the patriotic song in 1918 for a World War I comedy musical. Berlin would donate all royalties from the song — often considered a second national anthem — to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America.

1963: The last prisoners are transferred out of the maximum-security federal penitentiary on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. "The Rock" is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, operated by the National Park Service.
