MARCH 22
 1962:Barbra Streisand shoots to theatrical stardom at age 19, as she performs the role of Miss Marmelstein in I Can Get It for You Wholesale, a musical about New York's garment district in the 1930s, at the Shubert Theatre in New York. Streisand would be nominated for a Tony Award for best performance by a featured actress in a musical.

1956: Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. is convicted of violating Alabama state antiboycott laws, after he had led a bus boycott in Montgomery to protest segregated public transportation. He would spend two weeks in jail.

1969: Head coach John Wooden leads the UCLA Bruins to become the first college basketball team to win three consecutive NCAA championships. The Bruins defeat Purdue 92-72 on this day to win the third title. The Bruins would continue winning the title through 1973 for a record seven consecutive championships.
