CHARITY OF THE WEEK

Alongside the 16 other parts of the international Oxfam confederation, Oxfam America (oxfamamerica.org) works in more than 90 countries to help the people experiencing wars, famines, and natural disasters. Since its foundation in 1970 as an affiliate of the original British charity, Oxfam America has worked to create lasting solutions to poverty through initiatives such as its Saving for Change community finance program, which provides much-needed banking services in rural Africa, Asia, and Central America. Oxfam is currently helping 220,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Jordan with clothing, blankets, showers, and toilets. It is also active in eastern India, aiding 60,000 people displaced by last month’s Cyclone Phailin with emergency shelters, dry rations, and chlorine tablets for water purification.

This charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
