A LENS WITH A LOT TO SHOW

In the latest step toward sci-fi-style displays that sit on the surface of the eye, researchers at Belgium's Ghent University have developed a curved liquid-crystal display that can be embedded in contact lenses. (click below to read more)

The prototype uses very thin conductive polymer films that can withstand spherical molding and, unlike some other pioneering on-eye displays, can use the entire lens surface. The eye can't focus on anything this close, but the researchers in Belgium said that technology exists to overcome that issue and that someday a version of their lens could function as a "heads-up display," superimposing images (such as a map) on the user's field of vision.
