1982:Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Cats, starring Betty Buckley as Grizabella, debuts at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway, beginning a run of 7,485 shows that would last until Sept. 10, 2000.
1985: Four Palestinian Liberation Front terrorists seize the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro in the Mediterranean waters near Alexandria, Egypt, taking more than 400 passengers hostage. They would kill one passenger the following day, a wheelchair-using American named Leon Klinghoffer.
2003: Actor and bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger is elected governor of California in a special recall election to replace Gray Davis, beating 134 other candidates despite his limited political experience.
