1991 - Azerbaijan, the largest country in the Caucasus region of Eurasia (between Western Europe and Asia), declares independence from USSR.

1925 - The Grand Ole Opry, birthplace and showcase for many great country artists through the decades, opens in Nashville, Tennessee.

1922 - British Broadcasting Company (BBC), later called Corporation is founded as Britain's principal national broadcasting service.

1898 - United States of America takes possession of Puerto Rico, an island located in the northeastern Caribbean, near the Dominican Republic and Virgin Islands.

1954 - The Transistor radio is first announced by Texas Instruments.

1867 - Known as Alaska Day, the USA acquires possession of Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million.
