OCTOBER 12

 1944:The so-called Columbus Day Riot brings 35,000 hysterical people to the streets of Times Square in New York. No, this isn't a political gathering, it's thousands of teenage girls dressed in bobby socks demanding to see Frank Sinatra upon his return to the Paramount Theater.

1492: Italian explorer Christopher Columbus and his 90 crew members aboard the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria land on an island in the Bahamas, claiming what they believe to be East Asia for their patrons, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain.

1823: Scottish inventor Charles Macintosh reportedly sells his first rubber raincoat in Glasgow, Scotland. The waterproof coat would later be known as the "mackintosh" in his honor.


1933:Alcatraz becomes a federal prison

1810:First Oktoberfest: Bavarian royalty invites citizens of Munich celebrate royal wedding.

539:Persian ruler Cyrus the Great conquers Babylon, 539 BC
