1893:Esther Cleveland, the first and only child born in the White House, is born to President Grover Cleveland and first lady Frances Cleveland.

1956: With British actor Charles Laughton as guest host, 54 million Americans tune in to The Ed Sullivan Show to watch 21-year-old Elvis Presley sing "Don't Be Cruel," "Hound Dog," "Love Me Tender" and "Ready Teddy" in the first of his three appearances on the popular program. Presley is filmed from the waist up to avoid broadcasting his potentially scandalous dance moves.

1976: Chinese revolutionary Mao Zedong, leader of the Chinese Communist Party and head of state since 1949, dies in Beijing. He was 82.

1850:Utah & New Mexico become territories, while California is accepted as the 31st state of the U.S.

1983:The Color Computer 2 (Coco2) is announced by Radio Shack.


1926:National Broadcasting Company formed
