 1986:Oprah Winfrey becomes a national television star when The Oprah Winfrey Show is broadcast across the country for the first time. Over the next 25 years, Winfrey's program would make her one of the most powerful and influential women in the United States.

1565: An expedition led by Spanish Admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés establishes the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the continental United States at St. Augustine, Fla.

1966: The starship Enterprise begins its voyage, boldly going where no man has gone before, when Gene Roddenberry's science fiction series Star Trek premieres on NBC. Although the show would become a massive cult hit, it would originally receives low ratings and would be canceled after three seasons.
