SEPTEMBER 6

1901:While shaking hands with attendees of the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y., President William McKinley is mortally wounded by a gunshot from anarchist Leon Czolgosz. McKinley would die eight days later and be succeeded in the presidency by Theodore Roosevelt, while Czolgosz would be convicted of the assassination and executed by electric chair on Oct. 29.

1916: Clarence Saunders opens the original Piggly Wiggly, the first truly self-service grocery store, in Memphis, Tenn., helping to create the modern branded, packaged good.

2002: A joint session of Congress meets at Federal Hall in New York City, located only four blocks from Ground Zero, to commemorate the heroes and victims of Sept. 11, 2001. It is only the second time since 1800 that the U.S. Congress has convened outside of Washington, D.C.

1991:Russia restores the name Saint Petersburg to its 2nd largest city


1948:The Netherlands changes their throne and their new Queen becomes Juliana

1940:Michael becomes King of Romania

1628:Puritans settle in Salem

1952:Television programming begins in Canada.

1961:Bob Dylan makes New York City stage debut at Gaslight Cafe in Greenwich Village.

1522:Magellan's surviving ship, The Victoria, is first ship to circumnavigate the globe
