TODAY IN HISTORY


SEPTEMBER 5

 1972:Palestinian terrorists belonging to the group Black September kill two Israeli athletes and take nine others hostage in a raid on the Olympic Village during the Summer Games in Munich, Germany. An attempted rescue ends in further tragedy a day later, when all of the hostages, along with five of the terrorists and a West German police officer, would be killed in a shoot-out.

1881: The American Red Cross springs into action for the first time in its history, helping victims of the Great Fire of 1881 in western Michigan, which had killed at least 282 people and burned over a million acres.

1975: President Gerald Ford survives an assassination attempt by Lynette Fromme in Sacramento, Calif. Fromme, a follower of Charles Manson, is stopped by Secret Service agents before she can fire her handgun. Only 17 days later, another female assailant, Sara Jane Moore, would also attempt to assassinate the president, in San Francisco.

1986:Third annual MTV Music Awards' biggest winner is the Norwegian group "a-ha"

1958:Color video recording is successful on magnetic tape for the first time.
