 1992:The space shuttle Endeavour makes several historic firsts as it lifts off from Cape Canaveral, Fla. Among the crew of shuttle mission STS-47 are Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space; Mamoru Mohri, the first Japanese astronaut to fly on the space shuttle; and Mark Lee and N. Jan Davis, the first married couple in space.

1953: Massachusetts senator and future U.S. president John F. Kennedy marries Washington Times-Herald photographer Jacqueline Lee Bouvier at St. Mary's Church in Newport, R.I.

2003: Country music singer Johnny Cash, the Man in Black, dies in Nashville, Tenn., from complications of diabetes, less than four months after the death of his wife and frequent duet partner, June Carter Cash. He was 71.

1940:In Lascaux, France cave paintings are discovered

1890:British South Africa Company founds Salisbury (Rhodesia) in the Mashonaland territory.
