 1922:Future Tarzan actor Johnny Weissmuller sets a world swimming record in the 100-meter freestyle at a race in Alameda, Calif., breaking the 1-minute barrier for the first time by clocking in at 58.6 seconds.

1955: Bill Haley and His Comets' "Rock Around the Clock" reaches No. 1 on the Billboard pop music charts, where it would stay for eight straight weeks. The upbeat hit song is the first rock 'n' roll single to reach the top of the charts.

1962: Andy Warhol's "Campbell's Soup Cans" exhibit opens in the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, marking the West Coast debut of pop art.
