JULY 6 

1917:British army officer T.E. Lawrence, known as the iconic Lawrence of Arabia, and Auda abu Tayi lead Arab troops to capture the port of Aqaba, Jordan, from the Ottoman Empire, during the Arab Revolt ofWorld War I.

1933: New York Yankees star Babe Ruth hits the first home run during the first Major League Baseball All-Star Game, held at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The American League wins 4-2.

1957: Althea Gibson is the first black tennis player to win a singles title at Wimbledon, defeating American Darlene Hard. On the same day in 2000, Venus Williams would beat her sister, Serena, in the semifinals of the women's singles at Wimbledon. She would go on to defeat Lindsay Davenport in the women's finals, becoming the first black woman to win a singles title at Wimbledon since Gibson in 1957 and 1958.



1994:Forrest Gump, starring Tom Hanks in the title role, opens

1957:John Lennon and Paul McCartney of the Beatles are introduced to each other when Lennon's band the Quarrymen performs at the St. Peter's Church Hall

1933:The Major League Baseball's first All-Star Game, between stars of the American League and National League, is held in Comiskey Park in Chicago.



1189:Richard I "the Lionheart", known for his reputation as a great military leader and fierce warrior, is crowned King of England.
