1946:Louis Réard's famous invention, the bikini, is first modeled by Micheline Bernardini at a Piscine Molitor fashion show in Paris. Réard calls his skimpy creation "four triangles of nothing."

1865: William P. Wood is sworn in as director on the same day that the U.S. Secret Service is formed, originally as a branch of the U.S. Treasury to protect against counterfeit currency. Following the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901, the Secret Service would be responsible for safeguarding the president and other national leaders.

1975: Tennis great Arthur Ashe beats fellow American Jimmy Connors in four sets, becoming the first black man to win the men's singles title at Wimbledon.

1811:Venezuela becomes the first South American country to gain independence from Spain.

1998 :Japan launches a probe to Mars.

1996:Dolly the sheep first cloned mammal.

1954:BBC broadcasts its first news bulletin.

1865:Salvation Army is founded in London

1937:Hormel Foods Corporation introduced Spam to consumers.
