1965: NASA scientists receive the first close-up pictures of another planet from the Mariner IV spacecraft, flying 6,000 feet above the surface of Mars.


1971: President Richard Nixon announces his intention to visit the communist People's Republic of China. His "journey for peace" in February 1972 would begin the process of normalizing relations between the two nations.
