 1925:The "Monkey Trial" of high school science teacher John Scopes begins in Dayton, Tenn. Scopes is accused of violating a state law by teaching evolution. He's defended by Clarence Darrow and prosecuted by William Jennings Bryan.

1920: In what some considered the greatest thoroughbred match race of the 20th century, Man o' War outruns rival John P. Grier in the Dwyer Stakes at the Aqueduct Racetrack in New York City, setting a world record by completing the 1-mile race in just 1 minute and 49.2 seconds.

1999: The U.S. women's soccer team defeats China in a 5-4 penalty kick shoot-out to win the Third Women's World Cup, played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. The crowd of 90,185 fans is the largest to ever attend a women's sporting event.

1877:Spain gives a royal charter for villa of Mayaguez, currently known as Puerto Rico.

1962:Telstar, the world's first communications satellite, is launched into orbit
