 1944:More than 160,000 Allied troops wade ashore on the beaches of Normandy, France, beginning D-Day - the largest amphibious invasion in history - and the Allied attempt to reclaim Western Europe from Nazi Germany.

1966: James Meredith, the student who led the integration of the University of Mississippi in 1962, is shot and wounded by Aubrey James Norvell during Meredith's one-man March Against Fear, as he walks from Memphis, Tenn., to Jackson, Miss., to encourage African American voter registration in the South.

1968: Former U.S. attorney general and senator Robert F. Kennedy dies in Los Angeles, Calif., a day after he was shot at the Ambassador Hotel by Sirhan Sirhan, moments after claiming victory in the California Democratic presidential primary. He was 42.
