1972:Former Alabama governor George Wallace is shot by Arthur Bremer and permanently paralyzed while campaigning for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination in Laurel, Md. Bremer would be paroled in 2007.

1928: Mickey Mouse makes his first-ever appearance, in the cartoonPlane Crazy, an aviation-inspired short that is screened to test audiences on this day. The short, by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, would not be picked up by a distributor, and Steamboat Willie would be the first Mickey Mouse cartoon released in theaters.

1970: President Richard Nixon nominates Anna Mae Hays and Elizabeth P. Hoisington for promotions, making them the first women to hold the rank of general in the U.S. Army

1930:Ellen Church, a registered nurse, becomes world's first airline stewardess

1918:The US Post Office Department begins world's first regular airmail service.

1905:Las Vegas, Nevada is founded.

1869:National Woman Suffrage Association is formed, for women's right to vote.
