1954:Commanded by Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap, Viet Minh troops overrun the last remaining French positions after a 57-day siege at Dien Bien Phu, leading the French to give up their colonial interests in Vietnam and the rest of Southeast Asia in the 1954 Geneva Accords.

1789: A week after his inauguration, President George Washington attends the first inaugural ball, held in New York City. The inaugural ball would become an official presidential tradition thanks to first lady Dolly Madison, who threw a formal ball for President James Madison’s inauguration in 1809.

1952: British radar scientist Geoffrey Dummer proposes the concept of the integrated circuit, which will serve as the basic hardware for nearly all modern electronic devices, at an electronics symposium in Washington, D.C.

1914:US Congress establishes Mother's Day.

1998:Chrysler is purchased by Mercedes-Benz for $40 billion, making it the largest industrial merger in history.
