1616:William Shakespeare dies on this date, believed to be his 52nd birthday. Shakespeare is credited with composing 38 plays and 154 sonnets, among other works.

1900: The New York Journal prints the word "hillbilly" for the first time. Then spelled "Hill-Billie," the term refers to a white citizen of the Alabama hills who "has no means to speak of, dresses as he can, talks as he pleases, drinks whiskey when he gets it and fires off his revolver as the fancy takes him."

1969: Sirhan Sirhan, a Palestinian immigrant who grew up in California, is sentenced to death for the assassination of Sen. Robert Kennedy in June 1968, moments after the senator claimed victory in the Democratic presidential primary in California. Sirhan's sentence would be converted to life in prison three years later after California abolished the death penalty. His repeated requests for parole have been denied.

1985:"New Coke" is released by Coca-Cola - negative reviews led to the return of the original recipe 3 months later.

1635:The United States' first public school, a high school called Boston Latin School founded in Massachusetts, is also the current oldest school in the US.
