TODAY IN HISTORY

APRIL 5
1887:Helen Keller learns the word “water,” taught to her through manual sign language by tutor Annie Sullivan near the water-pump at Keller’s home in Tuscumbia, Ala. Keller’s comprehension of the meaning of “water” helps the girl who cannot hear, see or speak discover the keys to language and communication.

1722:Jacob Roggeveen discovers Easter Island.

1792: President George Washington exercises the presidential veto for the first time in American history, putting a stop to a bill that he found unconstitutional, as it would have given more political representation to northern states.  Congress does not attempt to overthrow the veto, but instead proposes a new arrangement, giving a U.S. representative for every 33,000 residents in a state.

1984: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of the Los Angeles Lakers scores his 31,421st career point in a game against the Utah Jazz to become the highest-scoring player in NBA history, a record he still holds with 38,387 points.
