TODAY IN HISTORY

NOVEMBER 15

1806: While exploring the western lands of the Louisiana Purchase, Lt. Zebulon Pike spots what he describes as a "small blue cloud" in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The mountain is now known as Pikes Peak, in present-day Colorado.

1956: Elvis Presley stars in his first film, Love Me Tender, which opens on this day at the Paramount Theater in New York City. A 50-foot cardboard cutout of the singer delights the King's screaming fans outside the theater.

1959: Herbert Clutter, a wealthy farmer, is murdered along with his wife and two of their children outside Holcomb, Kan. The quadruple homicide, committed by Dick Hickock and Perry Smith, serves as the basis for Truman Capote's nonfiction novel In Cold Blood.
