1997:The crowd-pleasing musical The Lion King, directed by avant-garde director Julie Taymor and based on the 1994 Disney film of the same name, premieres on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theater.

1971: NASA's Mariner 9 spacecraft goes into orbit around Mars, becoming the first man-made satellite to orbit a planet other than Earth.

1982: Thousands of veterans march in Washington to witness the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The V-shaped, reflective black granite memorial, designed by Yale University architecture student Maya Lin, now displays the names of 58,267 Americans killed or missing in action during the conflict.
