1776:At the start of the American Revolution, the influential pamphlet "Common Sense," written by Thomas Paine, is published anonymously throughout the 13 colonies, urging the colonists to seek independence from Great Britain.

1949: Gertrude Berg's popular radio show,The Rise of the Goldbergs, moves to television asThe Goldbergs with Berg starring as Molly Goldberg, the quintessential matriarch of an upwardly mobile Jewish American family.

1967: Edward Brooke, the first popularly elected African American senator, takes his seat to end an 85-year absence of blacks in the U.S. Senate.
