TODAY IN HISTORY

JANUARY 8
1918:In the midst of World War I, President Woodrow Wilson presents his Fourteen Points speech before Congress, articulating a progressive and idealistic plan for international peace and security, as well as self-determination for all people.

1790: President George Washington delivers a short address before both houses of Congress in New York City, then the provisional capital of the United States, discussing his administration's goals and his reflections on public affairs. Later known as the State of the Union address, giving an annual speech before Congress will become a presidential tradition.

1962: At age 21, golfer Jack Nicklaus makes his first professional appearance on the PGA Tour, tying for 50th place at the Los Angeles Open at the Rancho Park Golf Club. The young "Golden Bear" is awarded $33.33 for his efforts.
