TODAY IN HISTORY

NOVEMBER 9
1961:Brian Epstein meets the Beatles for the first time after a lunchtime concert at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, England. Epstein, sometimes referred to as the fifth Beatle, will manage the legendary band from Jan. 24, 1962, until his death in August 1967.

1938: Nazis burn synagogues and loot and terrorize Jewish homes and businesses throughout Germany and Austria. The event is known as Kristallnacht, the “night of broken glass.”

1989: East Germany’s communist government opens the border between East and West Berlin. The next day, joyful Germans will begin tearing down the Berlin Wall, a hateful symbol of nearly three decades of Cold War repression.
