TODAY IN HISTORY

NOVEMBER 6
1860:Abraham Lincoln is elected the first Republican president of the United States, defeating Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Northern Democrat Stephen Douglas and Constitutional Union candidate John Bell. By the time of Lincoln's inauguration on March 4, 1861, seven southern states will have seceded to form the Confederate States of America.

1861:
Jefferson Davis is elected to a six-year term as the first and only president of the Confederate States of America.

1984:
In a landslide victory, President Ronald Reagan wins reelection over Democratic challenger Walter Mondale. Reagan carries 49 states, while Mondale wins only his home state of Minnesota and the District of Columbia.
