1939:Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh join Margaret Mitchell and Confederate Army veterans attending the premiere of Gone With the Wind in Atlanta.

1944: Big band leader Glenn Miller disappears in a U.S. Army plane over the English Channel. He is never seen again.

1978:
President Jimmy Carter announces the United States will sever official relations with Taiwan and establish diplomatic ties with Communist China.
