But a study in the journal Nature Medicine fingers another culprit: carnitine, a compound abundant in red meat that also is sold as a dietary supplement and found in some energy drinks.
Carnitine comes from a Latin root meaning "flesh" or "meat." Other English words from the same root include carnival (from the idea of "putting away meat," starting the fasting for Lent) and carnivore.
