CHARITY OF THE WEEK

The Pachamama Alliance (pachamama.org)empowers indigenous people of the Amazon rain forest to protect their cultures and ancestral lands from development and oil exploration. Since 1995, the Alliance has partnered with Achuar, Shiwiar, and Shuar people to secure legal title to nearly 1.8 million acres of land that was slated for deforestation and drilling. The organization advocates on behalf of the Amazon—the source of 20 percent of the atmosphere’s oxygen—and its people by hosting symposiums in over 70 countries and by leading guided tours through the rain forest. In addition to its conservation efforts, the Alliance works with indigenous people to install water systems, educate women about safe birth practices, and promote sustainable development and trade.

The charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
