Doctors Without Borders (doctorswithoutborders.org), also known by its French name, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), is an international humanitarian organization that provides emergency medical care to millions of people caught in crises around the globe. Founded in 1971 by French doctors and journalists, this Nobel Peace Prize–winning charity operates in more than 60 countries wracked by disease, war, famine, and natural disasters. On any given day, MSF deploys 30,000 doctors, nurses, and public health experts, often on the front lines of conflict. The organization is currently fighting a hepatitis outbreak in South Sudan, treating a measles outbreak in Pakistan, and providing emergency medical aid in war-ravaged regions of Syria and northern Mali.
The charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
