1965: Marquette Frye and his brother, Roland, are pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. Racial tensions explode into six days of rioting.

1909: After the damaged American ship Arapahoe begins drifting, T.D. Haubner becomes the first to use the SOS signal for a vessel in distress.
