TODAY IN HISTORY

1977:David Berkowitz is arrested for the “Son of Sam” killings, which resulted in six deaths. Berkowitz later tried to sell his story, leading New York to pass a law preventing prisoners from profiting from their crimes.

1846: Congress charters the Smithsonian Institution, named after its benefactor, English scientist James Smithson.

1921: Franklin D. Roosevelt is stricken with polio at his summer home in Canada.
