Very strong pálinkas are called "fence-jaggers" and are a good way to indicate one's Hungarian origins. Many Hungarians tell tales of making their Polish friends drink pálinka and watching them go down.
Pálinka is traditionally made from plums, apples, pears, cherries or apricots and is double-distilled. The word pálinka comes from a Slavic root meaning "to distill." Very strong pálinka varieties can also be called "fence-tearers," from the idea that those drunk on pálinka often knock down fences as they stumble.
