CHARITY OF THE WEEK

Days End Farm Horse Rescue (defhr.org) is a volunteer-based animal-welfare organization that rehabilitates abused and neglected horses, many of whom suffer from malnutrition, untended wounds, hoof deformities, skin conditions, and parasitic infestations. Since 1989, DEFHR’s Maryland farm has grown from a small operation sheltering a few horses annually to a large-scale national facility housing 50 to 70 horses at any given time. Once they’ve been rehabilitated, the horses are evaluated and trained to better their chances for adoption. So far, DEFHR has rescued more than 1,800 horses, and 94 percent of them have been adopted. DEFHR also offers free educational programs, and dispatches staff to rescue abandoned animals after hurricanes.

The charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
