 1909:Former President Theodore Roosevelt sets sail from New York aboard the steamship Hamburg, embarking on a hunting trip to East Africa to collect natural history specimens for the Smithsonian Institution. Over the next year, the Smithsonian East Africa Expedition would collect 23,151 specimens.

1965: Virgil "Gus" Grissom and John Young blast off from Cape Kennedy, Fla., aboard their Gemini 3 spacecraft, nicknamed the "Molly Brown," inaugurating the era of American two-person space flight.

1998: At the 70th annual Academy Awards, James Cameron's blockbuster film Titanic wins 11 Oscars, including the awards for best picture and best director, tying the record set by Ben-Hur in 1959 and tied again in 2003 by The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
