1910:The French aviator Baroness Raymonde de Laroche is issued a pilot's
license by the Aéro-Club de France, becoming the world's first licensed
female pilot. De Laroche would be killed nine years later while
copiloting an experimental aircraft at Le Crotoy.
1941: Hugh Mulcahy of the Philadelphia Phillies is the first Major League Baseball regular player to be drafted into the U.S. Army before World War II under the Selective Service Act.
1971: Joe Frazier wins the world heavyweight boxing championship in a 15-round decision dubbed the "fight of the century," handing challenger Muhammad Ali the first loss of his career.
