Formed in 1979 in response to the plight of Cambodians fleeing famine, war, and the genocide of the killing fields, Mercy Corps (mercycorps.org) has grown to become a worldwide humanitarian organization that is now playing a major role in addressing the growing crisis for Syria’s refugees. Now operating in 46 countries, the organization has responded in recent years to the Haiti earthquake, the hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa, Japan’s tsunami, and Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Throughout the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis, Mercy Corps has worked to meet the essential needs of 2 million refugees in Jordan, Turkey, and Iraq by distributing food, water, clothing, and blankets; renovating buildings for shelter; digging wells; and building playgrounds in refugee camps.
The charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
