Every year, poachers kill hundreds of rhinos in Africa and Asia for their horns. The mission of the International Rhino Foundation (rhinos.org) is to protect the five remaining rhino species, two of which now number fewer than 100 individuals. Founded in 1989 to watch over Zimbabwe’s black rhinos, the IRF has expanded throughout Africa and southern Asia, running both indoor and outdoor conservation programs. IRF anti-poaching teams patrol key areas in Indonesia, monitoring rhino populations, deactivating traps, and apprehending poachers. The foundation runs a breeding center for Sumatran rhinos and is currently working to expand the only remaining Javan rhino habitat in hopes of stabilizing its population. The IRF also works with 60 zoos around the world to provide sanctuaries for rhinos.
